About Me

Welcome! My name is Kristal Serna, and I’m a Michigan-based watercolor painter who's inspired by nature.

Watercolor is my medium of choice because of its ability to create luscious, transparent hues. It’s a temperamental medium that often resists being controlled, much like Mother Nature herself. As a result, I think watercolor is an ideal medium for portraying nature.

I've wanted to be an artist since I was 6 years old and won a ribbon at my school's art fair for an elephant drawing I made. I don't know why I won though because it was hilariously bad. I couldn't remember where its trunk was supposed to go, so I guessed and drew the trunk coming out of the top of this poor elephant's head!

I grew up in California’s Napa Valley, but for the past decade I've lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Prior to becoming a professional artist, I worked as a lawyer and in other executive positions in the business world. My formal education includes a BA in Native American studies from UC Davis, a law degree from University of Michigan, and a BA in fine arts from Eastern Michigan University.
