Weekly Update June 8-12

I started a new painting this week, a trio of pale roses in a jar of water. It’s hard to describe the color of these roses. They’re a mix of cream, pink, and maybe even a bit of lavender. When I planned this painting, I intended for them to be almost white, but often what happens is that as I work farther into a painting, I’ll change my mind about what I want.

With this particular painting, I laid down a bit of pink on one of the petals and thought, “Ooh! I like that!“ So I added a bit more to other petals and then decided that these roses weren’t going to be off-white after all. That’s a great thing about art. You don’t have to be a slave to reality or your reference materials. You can make it whatever you want.

On a more personal note, my car's catalytic converter was stolen overnight while parked in front of my house. So I get to start the week dealing with getting that fixed. :( It's really frustrating. The thief can get a couple hundred bucks from the metals inside this part. Meanwhile, replacing it can cost over $1000. Argh! :( I'm trying to stay positive about it. At least I own a car; lots of people don't. At least it was only property damage; things can be replaced. Still, it's not the way I would have chosen to start the week. Well, it could have been worse. At least the whole car wasn't stolen!
