Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

As some of you know, I was sick from mid July through August with a cold followed by a sinus infection. I usually have a great immune system and rarely get sick, so this really knocked me for a loop. My art-making came to a complete standstill because I was too exhausted to stand at my easel. Today was my first day back, and I am so happy to be painting again!

My dad gave me a beautiful flower arrangement for my birthday yesterday. With its orange and purple hues, it practically screams autumn. I'm using it as the inspiration for this painting. I love flower bouquets, but they always seem to wilt too soon. So creating paintings from them allows me to keep their beauty alive forever.

This is just my base layer. I still have quite a bit of painting to do with this one. I'll probably spread it out over a few days. I don't like to spend too much uninterrupted time painting. Taking regular breaks lets me see the painting with fresh eyes and helps me from overworking the painting. Adding too many layers of watercolor is a really easy way to turn your colors into mud!

So this is it for today. Tomorrow, I'll decide where to go next with this.
